Taking Flight

A narrative to inspire the young and young-at-heart to be brave and adventurous in their mind and spirit. Designed to cultivate courage to branch off from standard societal expectations and live out your dreams. It’s not too late to take flight.

One Bright, Blustery, Blustery day

It happened that a feather

Blew past my bike and on it’s way.

Just like an airplane, it dipped and soared,

Making an endless journey

Of which it could never get bored.

I thought and thought, as I scratched my head,

“Why am I riding my bike,

When I might ride the wind instead?”

I’d have to be light as a feather…I thought,

and brave enough to bear

the rain and all sorts of weather.

But oh, what many wonders I’d see,

Sitting atop a wind gust,

Being carried from sea to sea.

I would jump on a southerly breeze

And go see the Florida Keys.

Maneuvering in the sky with ease,

I would navigate between palm trees.

Over mountains, over foreign plains

To tropical jungles where it rains.

See high above the Andes Mountains

The Amazon’s trailing fountain.

While riding on a desert heat wave,

My heart beats heavy, feeling brave.

Blown away by the pyramids’ size,

I turn south towards the Aussie skies.

Drifting on to the “Land Down Under”

Where the kangaroos’ paws thunder.

Far above the Pacific Islands,

The sun warms my face and my hands.

I stay lower than Mount Fuji’s peak,

Since the thin air makes me feel weak.

Now the mysterious Orient,

From where the three kings had once went.

Crossing into Russia can seem bold;

The home of the Kremlin feels cold.

The world’s largest mall is in Dubai,

So that’s the next place that I fly.

Now for the Mediterranean;

Classy middle-zone to be in.

As I cruise past the Eiffel Tower,

I barely miss a rain shower.

Over the land of dykes and windmills,

I spot the tulips and no hills.

Above castles on the countryside,

On a cool English gust I slide.

Ah, the beauty of the Emerald Isle,

Makes me slow down and dream a while.

Catching the wind of an Arctic freeze,

I wear jeans to cover my knees.

I’m thinking it’s time to come back home…

Home to the “Land of the Free.”

Where dreams are born with wings to roam.

Passing over a far-away bay,

I stall for just a moment,

To see the boats sailing away.

As I soak in the burning sunset,

I see in the glow a dream,

On which the sun will never set.

Yes, what a grand journey it will be,

When I’m grown-up and ready,

To go flying from sea to sea.

Though now it is just my bike and I,

This dream in my heart won’t die,

So I know that someday I’ll fly.

Take Courage, it is more risky to not learn how to fly than it is to fly.
